Application & Admissions Process

Application

Please complete the application and submit it with the non-refundable application fee to:

    Friends’ School
    5465 Pennsylvania Avenue
    Boulder, Colorado 80303

Applications are accepted beginning in August one year prior to the application school year. The admissions process, including school visits, begins in the fall one year prior to the application school year.

Friends’ School does not accept students on a first come basis (see Admissions Decisions below). The earlier you submit an
application, however, the greater the likelihood your application will be considered. The best time to submit an application is August through October one year prior to the application school year. Applications continue to be accepted throughout the year for any available openings or for our wait pool.

A completed Teacher Feedback Form is required, except in the case of Preschool applicants who have not previously attended a formal Preschool. Submit this enclosed form to your child’s most recent teacher or the teacher who knows your child best. It is the responsibility of the parent to ensure that Friends’ School has received this form, faxed or mailed by either the teacher or by the parent. This form need not be submitted with the application, but it must be returned to Friends’ during the admissions process for your application to be considered complete. If your child is just beginning with a new teacher, it is preferable to give the teacher some time to know your child before completing the Teacher Feedback Form.

All previous school records and reports, tests, evaluations and screenings are also required. Submit the enclosed Consent and Authorization for Release of Records and Information form to all of your child’s previous schools and any independent therapists or evaluators. Please make additional copies of this form as needed. Records and information do not need to be submitted with the application, but must be received during the admissions process for your application to be considered complete.

In addition to the Teacher Feedback Form, school records, tests and evaluations, etc., it may be necessary for a Friends’ teacher or staff member to talk to your child’s current teacher or therapist for additional information.

School Visits

Parent school visits are mandatory and usually scheduled in the morning for approximately one hour without your child. A school visit for your child will also be scheduled as a part of the application process. Your child’s visit will take place in her/his current grade level class during a regular school day and will include a teacher interview. The length of the visit is determined by the grade level of the applicant. Preschool and Kindergarten applicants typically visit for 30-45 minutes, 1st grade applicants visit for 1-2 hours, 2nd – 5th grade for a full day. A mid-year application into our elementary program will require two full day visits with an optional third visit if needed.

Admissions Decisions

In February, Friends’ School current families re-enroll for the next school year. This process determines the number of openings available at each grade level for applicants. The admissions committee meets and applicants who have completed all the steps are considered for acceptance. If enrollment is offered, a contract and tuition deposit are required for acceptance. The application and admissions process continues throughout the year until all classes are full. A number of factors are considered in applicant priority and admissions decisions. Some of these include: appropriate fit for Friends’ School, siblings of returning students or alumni, applicants of diversity, gender balance in each class. We welcome children with learning differences and special needs into Friends’ School as long as we feel we can provide a successful environment for a child’s needs and for the rest of the students in the class. We may not be able to accept a child if we determine we cannot adequately accomodate the child’s needs.

Wait Pool

We cannot offer enrollment to every application request. In most cases, if you are not offered admission, you can choose to be in the wait pool. Friends’ School maintains a wait pool for the upcoming school year only. If an accepted student withdraws unexpectedly at any point before the school year begins or during the school year, applicants in the wait pool will be offered the space using the same priority factors mentioned above. We do not keep the wait pool for longer than the current school year. Wait pool applicants who are not offered admission as the result of a withdrawal, have the option to re-apply for the next school year and begin the application process over again. In this situation the application fee will be waived.

Important Information for all Preschool Applicants

In an effort to provide a quality Preschool choice to parents who want an independent school setting for Preschool only and to parents who want a Preschool through Elementary setting, we have approximately twice as many Preschool students as we have space for in our Kindergarten. All Friends’ Preschoolers must apply for admission to Friends’ Kindergarten. In the event that we have more Preschoolers who want to continue to Kindergarten than we have available openings, we will use the same priority factors mentioned above to make enrollment decisions.
