In March, Carol Tierney, our school psychologist, spoke to Friends’ parents about building resilience in young children, how to support them in difficult situations, and how to help them develop coping strategies.
To celebrate National Poetry Month, Friends’ School elementary students participated in “Poem in Your Pocket Day” on April 18th. Each student shared a favorite poem with their classmates, families, and friends.
Friends’ Elementary students celebrated Earth Day on April 23rd by cleaning up the Wellman Ditch, which runs behind the school. After the clean up, all the students were served lunch from Noodles & Co. provided by Aaron and Jenifer Kennedy. After lunch the students will began Movin’ & Boppin’ – a fun hour-long event of movement to raise money for our library and technology.
Our annual talent show, the Friends’ Elementary Showcase was held on May 2nd which included such acts as dancing, singing and Brian Mowat and his electric guitar. It was followed by the Friends’ School 20th Anniversary Ice Cream Social which included at cake and ice cream, music by Harwood Ferguson and alumni friends, memory books to commemorate the event, and a special gift to Polly for her long service to the school.
Thank you to Julie Maier, mother of Henry in MLC-S and William in ELC, who volunteered to be the point person and to Shel Gerding, mother of Ian in Pre-K West, for organizing the successful Spring Parent Workday and to all parents who showed up to clean and beautify our school and grounds.
The annual Volunteer Appreciation Coffee was held in May to thank all of our wonderful parents and volunteers who do so much for Friends’.
In May, 5th graders raised almost $1,000 from the 5th Grade Car Wash, bake sale and T-shirt sale. Profits were donated to the Fifth Grade Endowment Legacy Fund. In addition, two donors generously offered to match what the students raised in the car wash. 5th graders also sold 50 Malawian cotton bags and raised $750 which will be sent to the Tanzanian Children’s Orphanage to buy school supplies, books, uniforms, and general support. We greatly appreciate everyone’s generous support!
The annual Student/Staff Soccer Game was held to a “sold-out” crowd on May 28th. Try as they may, the staff was unable to hold off the 4th and 5th graders who won by a score of 7 to 5.
Students enjoyed a great day of games, relays, swimming, and fun at the Elementary Field Day held at the Meadows Club on May 30th.
The Elementary Silver and Gold Celebration marked the end of the school year on the evening of June 5th. Families were treated to beautiful songs, inspirational speeches, special appearances by the class of 2001 (who graduated from high school this spring), and the witnessing of all students’ transitions into the next grade. A wonderful celebration followed with graduation cake and lemonade and reunions of past alumni.
