Early Learning Center

Literacy (Reading & Writing)

READING
Read with understanding or get support if struggling, author studies, contrast and comparison of story elements, develop strategies (examples: drawing inferences from text, decoding skills), sustained silent reading for least 15 minutes a day

WRITING

Content. Journals, poetry journals, rough drafts, editing (with mechanics secondary to content): capitals, proper spacing between words, periods, question marks, sentence structure

Spelling. Use conventional and temporary spelling, introduction to word families, patterns, generalizations, Marie Clay’s basic word list

Handwriting. Letter size and formation, clarity

Publishing. Magic Pencil, Pencil Press, class and individual books, school newsletter



Math

Patterns and functions, estimation. Logic: sorting, classifying, comparing, introduction to standard measurement. Geometry: attributes, characteristics, and properties. Numbers: introduction to place value, counting to 100, counting by 2’s, 5’s,10’s, introduction of facts to 20, introduction to regrouping odd and even, introduction to symbolic graphing


Social Studies

The community around us, community service, cooperative group skills, mediation, appreciation of different peoples and cultures, foreign culture study, current events

Science

Environmental science: recycling, composting, conservation. Life science: plants and animals, endangered species. Earth science: weather, the moon, water. Physical science: electricity, batteries and bulbs, magnets. Scientific process: observation, prediction, experimentation, comparison, analyzing, synthesizing

The Arts

Materials are used to develop awareness of and familiarity with basic visual elements: line, shape, texture, pattern, color, exploration of materials, self-expression and imagination, seeing, two-dimensional work with: crayons, oil pastels, pencils tempera paint, watercolor, collage, basic print making, sewing, weaving, fabric work, three-dimensional work with constructed pieces, clay, dioramas, drama and oral presentations

Foreign Language

Introduction to language and culture including: greetings and expressions of politeness, questions and answers, weather, seasons, months, days, colors, numbers, parts of the body, animals, family members, action verbs, commands, relational directions, pronunciation and oral comprehension skills, verse, poems, songs, and games

Music

Work with rhythm using instruments, clapping games, and movement, listening skills, singing in tune, introduction to mallet instruments and improvisation
