Young
children are naturally curious. At Friends we use that curiosity
as the building block for a flexible yet structured curriculum that
is of intrinsic interest. Beginning with exploring in the preschool,
numeracy and literacy are taught. Scientific thinking is developed
through observation, experimentation and problem solving. By the time
children leave Friends, we expect them to be fluent readers,
spontaneous and literate writers and sound mathematicians who are
able to apply their knowledge in the real world. We expect children
to be perceptive, critical, eclectic thinkers who look beyond the
superficial. |

Children
are encouraged to investigate and learn from the world around them
while discovering their own creative potential through a variety of
hands-on activities. Building, using manipulatives to solve problems,
writing, painting, and more help children become intimately involved
in our curriculum. In addition, music, drama, outdoor education and
community service are integrated on a regular basis. Through varied
and frequent field trips, children are exposed to the world around
them. |

At
Friends we believe that every child is unique and should be
appreciated for who they are and for the special gifts they possess.
We also believe that all children need a safe place where they are
valued, respected, and heard. We spend time understanding the needs
of individual children and building community. We have a strong moral
and spiritual framework which provides a kind but firm environment
where care and concern for each other and the earth are woven into
the fabric of the school. |
