Elementary Curriculum Guide

Kindergarten

Literacy (Reading & Writing)

READING
Introduction to different genres and authors, develop strategies (examples: letter/sound relationships, picture clues), shared and guided reading, reading for meaning, dramatic interpretation of text, class books, listening center, alphabet center, the reading and writing connection

WRITING

Content. The writer’s voice, writing as communication, language experience stories, fiction, non-fiction, letters, lists, poetry, titles, captions, personal writing, writing for and identifying an audience, introduction to capitals, periods, question marks, proper spacing between words, the writing and reading connection

Spelling. Temporary spelling and the initial transition to conventional spelling through high frequency words

Handwriting. Upper and lower case letter formation

Publishing. Magic Pencil, Pencil Press, class and individual books


Math

Patterns and functions, estimation. Geometry: visual recognition of attributes, characteristics, and properties. Logic: sorting and classifying, non-standard measurement, comparisons. Numbers: developing number sense, introduction of facts 1-10, recognition of 2-digit numbers, introduction to writing of numerals 1-10, counting to 100, odd and even, representational graphing


Social Studies

Self and family, appreciation of different beliefs and customs, cooperative group skills, problem solving, conflict resolution, community service, foreign culture study, current events



Science

Environmental science: recycling, composting. Life science: living things, insects, plants and animals. Physical science: structures, water, solids, liquids, gases. Earth science: light and shadow. Scientific process: observation, prediction, comparison, experimenting

The Arts

Materials are used to develop awareness of and familiarity with basic visual elements: line, shape, texture, pattern, color. Exploration of materials, self-expression and imagination, seeing, two-dimensional work with: crayons, oil pastels, pencil, tempera paint, watercolor, collage, basic print making, sewing, weaving, fabric work. Three-dimensional work with constructed pieces, clay, dioramas, drama productions, coral reading

Foreign Language

Introduction to language and culture including: greetings and expressions of politeness, questions and answers, weather, seasons, months, days, colors, numbers, parts of the body, animals, family members, action verbs, commands, relational directions, pronunciation and oral comprehension skills, verse, poems, songs, and games

Music

Basic singing, listening, and rhythmic skills, focus on songs with fairly narrow notational range, use of rhythm instruments, game playing
