Literacy (Reading & Writing)

At Friends’, we believe that reading and writing are an inseparable process that fulfill a variety of functions, and are powerful tools for learning. Our objective is to lay the foundations of literacy in the early years. We believe good first teaching is essential for continued success in reading and writing. The best approach to teaching literacy is actually a combination of approaches, and includes both phonics and whole language. We emphasize child-centered reading and writing programs, and work to make learning literacy rewarding for the children. In all classes, reading and writing for meaning is paramount. Writing is purposeful and meaningful. Children learn to read and write by reading and writing many different kinds of texts, and the success students experience in reading and writing encourages them to read and write more. Our ultimate goal is to help children become lifelong readers and writers.
