Preschool Curriculum Guide
Outdoor Play

Note: when the weather is nice, the classroom moves outdoors so that many of the above curriculum categories can also happen outside.


What Children Do . . .

Running, climbing, throwing and kicking balls, digging in the sandbox, pretend play, wood working: hammers, saws, and screwdrivers, swinging, sliding, riding tricycles, playing with snow, discovering bugs and birds, gardening and planting, and climbing trees.

What Children Learn . . .

Socially & Emotionally

Physical confidence, self confidence, self image, cooperative playing, environmental appreciation, sharing and taking turns, connection with the natural world.

Cognitively: Literacy, Math, & Science

Problem solving, physical properties of materials, planning skills, cause and effect, vocabulary development, observation skills, and listening skills.

Physically

Body awareness, large motor development, small motor development, eye-hand coordination, and balance skills.
Note: gross motor play is also available indoors with an indoor climber, mats, large blocks, etc.
