NOW ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS FOR THE 2018-19 SCHOOL YEAR.
FIELD-BASED RESIDENCY MODEL
Friends School is fortunate to offer a unique teacher preparation program to aspiring teachers that will enable them to attain a Colorado teaching license as well as a Master’s degree in education. This highly regarded graduate program places teachers in public and independent schools throughout Boulder County each year.
Hands-On Classroom Teaching Experience
Teacher candidates spend four days each week for one school year in either an elementary or preschool classroom, working alongside a mentor teacher in a co-teaching role. Coursework begins in August with an orientation week and continues every Friday throughout the school year.
LICENSE & MASTER'S DEGREE
Colorado Teaching License
Upon completion of the program, teacher candidates receive their Initial Colorado Teaching License in either Elementary Education or Early Childhood Education.
Participants in the preparation program may choose to complete a Master’s in Education and Human Development, through our partnership with the University of Colorado Denver. Teacher candidates in the Master’s program receive eighteen hours of graduate credit for their classroom teaching experience and coursework completed during their program year. The remaining eighteen credits are generally taken over the summer and following year.
The Friends School Teacher Prep Program was one of the best years of my life, and it has shaped my entire teaching career. I completed the program in 2008 and have been teaching from the heart ever since. Thank you! ~ Mackenzie F-H, former TC
I am a recent doctoral graduate at UCD. I received my EdD in Leadership for Educational Equity with a specialization in Instructional Leadership in December 2015. I am committed to the support and growth of pre-service teachers and, thus, the Friends’ School Teacher Preparation Program is a perfect fit. In addition, I teach courses for several programs at UCD, including development, pedagogy and general EdPsych courses. Prior to my time in higher ed, I spent several years teaching in preschool, elementary and high school classrooms, with many of those years spent right here at Friends’.
I am a self-proclaimed (and I'm sure identified by others) nerd! I love school, teaching, books, and really any type of learning setting. For example, I annoy my mechanic with continual questions. I will sit and watch an air balloon take off (even if I have somewhere to be) just to see how the process is completed. You get the picture?! Basically, I love to fill my brain with more info - no matter the subject matter!
I continually state that human beings are the most fascinating species on the planet. I firmly believe this, as we do some wonderful, magnificent, troubling and downright devious things. Because of my fascination with, well, us, I am a people watcher. I will often spend my spare time doing things where I can observe or be with others - sitting at a coffee shop, hanging at a park or trail, even watching reality TV.

I am thrilled to join the Friends’ School community as the Teacher Preparation Program Manager. After completing my B.S. in Speech Language Pathology & Audiology at Ithaca College, I moved out to Colorado, fell in love with teaching and education and have never looked back. I have spent the last 6.5 years working in Early Childhood Education as a teacher, administrator, mentor, and graduate teaching assistant. Children fascinate and inspire me as masters of curiosity, creativity and innovation. I believe strongly in the power of education in nurturing and building on these traits. Therefore, I am honored and excited to be a part of this program, supporting teachers in their growth as leaders in the field.
I am originally from Vermont, and while I’m not a native Coloradan, I think I fit in pretty well here! I drive a subaru, love R.E.I., have a senior dog named Skippy, and enjoy skiing, running, camping, hiking, biking, and yoga. Cheese and chocolate are staples in my diet, but I also just love food and cooking in general. In addition, I am a bread baker, novice gardener, and I also crochet. Music is a big passion of mine, both as a consumer and as a musician myself. I am a singer-songwriter, guitar player, and enjoy collaborating and performing with bands and other local musicians in the area.
